Serene Sunday in Coshocton, OH

With an early start to our day, we took a little trip to Coshocton Lake Park in Coshocton, OH to fish. We arrived a little after 8:00 am and fished at the first lake for a bit and then moved onto the second lake after walking in the tunnel under the overpass, passing the old canal blocks, and walking over the river’s bridge. Even though we did not catch anything, we still enjoyed being near the water and soaking up the peaceful and quiet natural surroundings. My husband had fun trying to catch what looked to be a solid two-pound largemouth bass, but it did an impressive Houdini move off the hook. As we were leaving, while we walked on the bridge, we spotted a snapping turtle below sunbathing on a river rock.

Finding solid reviews on the Indian Bear Cork & Coffee restaurant nearby, my husband suggested we stop there for lunch at the nearby location of Roscoe Village, as it was just a little over a mile away. We chose “The Bear” and “The Greek” salads, which were humongous! These were the most filling salads we have ever eaten in our lives. It is no wonder the server asked us if we wanted take-home boxes for our meals before we even took our first bites! After lunch, we checked out a few local art/gifts shops/galleries and enjoyed talking with all of the owners/staff within Roscoe Village, a most pleasant atmosphere. We are sure to revisit Coshocton Lake Park and Roscoe Village; we will probably just get an earlier start to catch some fish!

Early Morning Fishing Adventure

We got up at 3:00 am, I fixed a big breakfast (waffles, scrambled eggs mixed with leftover stuffed eggplant, topped with cheese, & a side of toasted everything bagels) and then we headed to Coshocton, Ohio for an early morning fishing adventure. Coshocton Lake Park is a very peaceful and natural destination, located less than a mile from the city of Coshocton and Roscoe Village. Wooded hiking trails, paved walking and biking paths, and a few fishing holes are all free for visitors to enjoy. In addition, a huge public playground is available for use. An outdoor aquatic center near the campground looks like a lot of fun and comes with a cost for admission. There is another admission to the canal boat, as the Lake Park complex provides rides seasonally; one can feel like traveling in the 1830s when taking a ride on the horse-drawn Monticello II Canal Boat. We were visiting too early for a ride on this visit, but I have been on the canal boat in the past and would enjoy the historical transportation again one day. We passed remnants of the old canal while walking to our second fishing hole.

We fished at three different locations within walking distance, but most of our bites were at our first stop. We fished during the perfect time, as we both got several bites on our lines, 5:45-9:15 am. One of us caught two large-mouth bass & it was a beautiful morning! On our way home afterward, we stopped at Dizurts, a bakery in Heath, Ohio, because I was hungry for their cinnamon pecan roll. A pleasant surprise we discovered as we entered the baker was that they had many shark themed baked items available as well. So naturally, both of us being fans of the movie, JAWS (dressed with the theme, my husband was sporting a JAWS t-shirt) and sharks in general, we picked up a lemon cupcake with blue raspberry icing and a sugary shark head to top it off. My husband also decided he wanted to dig into a Boston crème parfait; this was a scrumptious way to end our early morning fishing escapade!

Trails, Fishing and Rivers | Mohican State Park

This weekend we traveled to Mochican State park.

Thousands of wooded acres greet visitors to the Mohican region. Mohican State Park’s wild landscape offers truly stunning views from both land and water. Clear Fork Gorge, Lyon’s Falls, and the Mohican State Scenic River are just a few of the must-sees for adventurers. Overnight accommodations include a modern full-service lodge, large family campground with pool, deluxe vacation cabins, and a primitive camping area with stream-side sites.

Several hiking trails traverse the park.

Clear Fork Gorge Loop Trail 0.5 mile- moderate
Grist Mill Overlook Loop Trail – 0.7 mile
Hemlock Gorge Trail – 2 miles – difficult – Leads to a scenic covered bridge
Hog Hollow Trail – 2.5 miles
Lyons Fall Trail – 2 miles – moderate to difficult – follows Clear Fork Gorge and features two waterfalls
North Rim Trail – 1 mile
Pleasant Hill Trail – 3/4 mile – easy – Follows the lake shoreline and offers beautiful views of the lake
Stage Coach Trail (cut off on Lyons Falls) – 0.2 mile
Shelter House Trail – 0.33 mile

Named “Trail of the Month” by Runners World Magazine, Mohican State Park is the home to one of the oldest ultra marathons in the U.S., The Mohican Trail 100, and also hosted the first ever US Track and Field Ultra Marathon National Championship in 2005.

Hikers are also permitted on the bridle trails and the mountain biking trails. Please be courteous to other trail users and give right-of-way to riders while hiking on their trails.

We plan on going back in October for a weekend staying at the Landoll’s Mohican Castle, deep in the heartland of Mohican country and Loudonville, Ohio
