We enjoyed a late morning visit and lengthy stroll at Baker’s Acres Greenhouse last Saturday. Their Heavy Metal Houseplants event was taking place, which according to their Facebook page, included “seriously metal plant releases and restocks including a very large monster Burle Marx Flame”. With heavy metal music playing over their outdoor speakers, the themed event was accented effectively with chalkboard painted signs hung above and amidst the interesting tropical plants noting, “Exotica: Dare to be Rare” and “Monstera…A House for All”. One of the creative and clever signs was hanging near a retro electric guitar and amp. Some of our favorite plants were a spotted leopard plant, various uniquely cool Begonias, Tillandsia Xerographicas (large air plants), and a Tibouchina grandifolia (a plant with big fuzzy leaves; my personal favorite- it was gorgeous!). Humorously, decorative skeletons sporting handkerchiefs, leis, and straw hats were hanging out among the cactus plants. We did not purchase anything on the visit, but we contemplated a few; we just did not have the right amount of space available at the time, but it was still a pleasant experience. Ironically, for dinner, my husband cooked up some delicious turkey tacos using kale and tomatoes from our garden (the original plants came from Baker’s Acres).
Awesome time. What a great day.
